Fruitceuticals - The Evolution of Fruit

Filed under: Nutrition @ 1:46 pm

Since the beginning of time, everyday fruits have been known to help maintain a healthy body. The popular “5-A-Day for Better Health” is a national program encouraging Americans to increase their daily servings of fruit and vegetables to five or more per day.

While each fruit is good for you, most offer a specific natural health benefit. For example, research indicates that Montmorency tart cherries contain over 17 natural compounds including antioxidants, some of which can provide natural relief for joint pain caused from gout, arthritis and inflammation. The list of health benefits obtained from Montmorency tart cherries is impressive indeed!

Researchers believe that the joint pain relief delivered by tart cherries may not come from a specific antioxidant in the fruit, but may come from the synergistic effect of all its natural compounds. Tart Cherries may be 10 times stronger than Aspirin or Ibuprofen in relieving arthritic pain. In addition, Montmorency tart cherries naturally contain the popular antioxidant, melatonin. Melatonin helps to maintain wakefulness during the day and sleepiness during the night.

Antioxidants are best known to increase immune function and possibly decrease risk of infection and cancer by helping to prevent or repair damage to the body’s cells. The particular combination of antioxidants found in tart cherries offers an anti-inflammatory benefit, which is appreciated by those suffering from joint pain caused by arthritis, gout, fibromyalgia or over-exertion.

The Benefit of Fruit - The Advantage of Science

Linda L. Patterson is a living testimony of the soothing affects of cherries on her joint pain. “I enjoy crocheting and lately my hands have been so painful I couldn’t crochet for more than about 30 minutes”, says Patterson. In an attempt to find relief from her pain, a friend recommended Fruit Advantage Tart Cherry capsules (www.fruitadvantage.com), a supplement made with whole Montmorency tart cherries. “Within the first week of taking the tart cherry capsules my hands felt so much better.”, says Ms. Patterson. “I am now able to crochet without the pain in my hands.”

Fruit Advantage Tart Cherry capsules are a nutraceutical product. Nutraceuticals are generally defined as dietary supplements or foods that provides medical or health benefits. While many people are living a fast-paced life, they can still achieve the 5-a-day fruit serving recommendation with food supplements added to a healthy diet.

The Fruitceuticals company was recently founded with the mission of creating nutraceutical products that focus on the health benefits found in specific fruits. “Our goal as a company is to combine the benefits of whole fruit with the advantage of science,” states Mike Weir, Director of Marketing with Fruitceuticals. “While everyone’s familiar with the wonderful world of fruit and its overall health benefits, we are researching and will offer the specific benefits of each unique fruit.”

In January 2005, Fruitceuticals reached an agreement with Traverse Bay Farms (www.traversebayfarms.com) to market and distribute Fruit Advantage Tart Cherry capsules worldwide. Until recently, Traverse Bay Farms was the master distributor for the Fruit Advantage brand.

“Fruit Advantage Tart Cherry is laboratory tested, scientifically-based and precisely manufactured to provide the health benefits of whole cherries in a convenient, easy-to-swallow capsule”, says Weir. Perhaps Fruitceuticals will introduce an entirely new generation of fruit-based nutraceuticals. If Tart Cherry is any indication, Fruitceuticals is certainly on its way to building a global brand starting with Fruit Advantage.

Andrew LaPointe is Global Director of Marketing for the combined marketing venture of Traverse Bay Farms and Fruitceuticals.

Nutrition Facts

Filed under: Nutrition @ 10:47 pm

Facts about nutrition are becoming important to a greater number of people and that is terrific news for your health. There is an old saying that states: “You are what you eat.” - This holds true today just as it did centuries ago; even if it was originally coined when the majority of people received insufficient food. Today it refers more to the worldwide trend of over-eating.

Fortunately packaging now gives more advice on calories and servings. The major fault is that we ignore serving sizes; many people are quite happy to eat double size servings and then wonder why the pounds keep going on and the inward curves turn outward.

The new US label regulations force manufacturers to be more open with Nutrition facts and here are few tips concerning what you should check on the label.

Check serving size and use it. This figure is nutritional fact.

Check calories. A healthy adult requires at least 2,000 each day in total. Try to keep it below 2,750. The average American adult currently eats around 3,500 calories each day.

Avoid sugars. Sugar is calorie high and each one of us should check whether we need the amount of sugar that we use. I avoid sugar in beverages so that I can eat sweet things from time to time.

Know your fats. Foods that are low in saturated fats, trans-fats and cholesterol are good foods and will help reduce the risk of heart disease. (5% DV or less is low, 20%DV or more is high). Most of the fats you eat should be polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fats. Keep total fat intake between 20% and 35% of total calories.

Reduce salt intake. Research indicates that our total sodium (salt) intake should never exceed 2,300 milligrams (about 1 teaspoon) each day to reduce the risk of high blood pressure. You should also know that the majority of salt is taken in from processed foods rather than from the saltshaker. - Watch those processed foods. Also look for foods that are high in potassium because they counteract the effects of salt on blood pressure.

Finally we come to exercise. The whole world seems to have forgotten how important it is to exercise and exercise burns calories which reduces weight. We should slowly work our way up to one hour of exercise each day. This can be done in 12 five-minute periods or 6 ten-minute periods until you are able to exercise for longer periods.

If you are looking to lose weight you will find more articles in our News Blogs articles section.

Whats next for behind the Scenes Powerhouse

Filed under: Biz @ 5:08 pm

The oil giant has to face the future without Peter Sutherland , its Irish chairman, but what is next for the CV of the man who’s already run the World Trade Organisation?

Peter Sutherland was in a grim mood on Monday morning: the day after his native country’s loss to Argentina in the Rugby World Cup, he could scarcely contain himself. He’d been at the game at Parc des Princes with his children and words such as “suicidal” and “bejesus” eminated from his lips.

Barely a few hours previous, he was on the Eurostar, travelling back to Paris, for a meeting that was part politics and part business. Such are the opposing worlds of Sutherland: Dubliner, father of three, huge rugby enthusiast, chairman of BP, chairman of Goldman Sachs International, new chairman of the London School of Economics, diplomatic fixer and afterdinner speaker extraordinaire.

If at the Pearly Gates we are given the option I’d opt to come back as a smart Irishman. In the past, I might have said an English aristocrat but it’s the Irish who are the masters now. They seem to be in control of everything. The epitome of this is Sutherland, a key figure in two business powerhouses as well as an extremely wealthy individual, thanks to his partnership at Goldman. But he’s served 10 years at BP and has initiated the search for a successor. Suddenly, the oil giant needs to accept the reality of life without him .

It’s very easy to establish through talking to anyone at BP, these past few years to realise what a powerhouse Peter Sutherland has been in the background. While the company has had its problems in America, they have been operational. On personnel matters, notably the attempt by Lord Browne and his friends to get the chief executive’s term extended, and then Browne’s departure following his lying under oath, Sutherland has played a pivotal role. His contribution in bringing BP forward is something which few can dispute.

PsP Music Downloads - Review Get the Best

Filed under: Web Of Music @ 12:17 am

PsP handhelds are one of the newest and most fun ways to play games, watch movies and listen to music. PsP music downloads are just some things that you can do on your psp besides just games. PsP music downloads is a fun and easy.

There are many places on the net were one can find psp music downloads and psp movie downloads. Some sites have you pay per song or movie basis and sometimes charge up to a couple dollars for each download. Other sites require a membership and a monthly fee were user share files. This method sometimes can be frustrating when you are in the middle of a download and the user signs off before the download is complete.

I prefer to use sites that have a onetime membership for psp music, psp movie, psp games and psp software downloads. The best sites have their databases jammed pack with over a million songs, movies, games, and software available for downloading. Some of these sites have no limit to the amount of downloads you do per day.

There are some sites were the database does not have quality psp movies and psp music downloads and they might be very slow to download. I have placed a link at the top of this site for a one that has quality psp music downloads, psp movies, psp games and software downloads. You may want to check it out.

Once you have downloaded some psp music, psp movies and games you can take them anywhere you go. This is great when you have places to go or have long travel times to get somewhere. It really helps to pass the time away, while your having fun either listening to psp music or watching a psp movie or just playing a new game. There are so many games available you should never run out of games to play music to listen to and movies to watch.

Make sure that what ever site you choose either comes with a money back guarantee in case your not satisfied with their database of music songs games and software. I have been using the above site for over three months and never had the need to ask for my money back. I now have so many psp music downloads, psp movies and games downloaded that I often find it hard to decide which game to play, song to listen to, or movie to watch. If you’re wise and make the right choice you will be having fun all day long with your psp.

Adolescent Nutrition: Teen Challenges and How to Face Them

Filed under: Nutrition @ 2:55 am

Teen nutrition can be very difficult to manage as a parent. Let’s face it, teens in general can be difficult to manage at times.

There are plenty of obstacles that stand in the way of making sure that your teenage is eating healthy:

Teens spend more time out of the house and on their own than younger children. They are making choices for themselves, often based on convenience and the “hip factor”.

You also can’t keep teens away from food in the house. With younger kids, it’s easier to hide food, or keep the cookie jar out of reach. It gets tough when our kids are taller than we are!

Teens just have a tendency to migrate toward junk. Junk food tastes good, and they really aren’t able to understand or relate to the long-term consequences of eating poorly.

There are several ways that you can make a difference in your teen’s nutrition and overall health:

Keep the junk out of the house.

While you can’t always control what happens outside your house, at least you can regulate what happens within. Don’t buy junk and sugared drinks, and they won’t have access to it. Shop smart and have healthy foods that are easily accessible for snacks.

Bring your child shopping with you.

Teach your child what foods are better for them and why. Show them how to use a food label to help make good choices. Teach them today, so that when they are really on their own, they’ll have a skill that will help them live longer and happier.

Let them see the benefits.

Explain things in terms that they can relate to and understand. You can tell them that obesity will lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer, but that probably won’t mean much to them today. Tell them that they can feel better about themselves, climb stairs without getting out of breath, and play longer, harder, and better.

Don’t be afraid to tell them what the right thing is to do. Studies show that teens really do pay attention to what their parents say, and that a parent carries more influence with their teen than their friends.

Hypertension -Twelve Simple Things You Can Do To Lower Your Blood Pressure

Filed under: Nutrition @ 8:01 pm

Headlines:

Nearly a quarter of American adults just got diagnosed with a
new disorder: pre-hypertension. Is your blood pressure
low enough?

Nearly 23% of people over the age of 18 have pre-hypertension
(blood pressure over 120/80 and less than 140/90).
Another 25% of those over 18 have full-blown hypertension
(blood pressure over 140/90).

Hypertension

At age 34 I had to have an insurance exam. I weighed 175 pounds
on a 5′6″ frame and for the first time in my life, had elevated
blood pressure, 140/90, up from 118/78. That was one of the first major health warnings my body gave me.

Pre-hypertension

Back in those days hypertension was considered anything above
140/90. Today we have the diagnosis of “pre-hypertension”
which is any elevation of blood pressure over 120/80. Starting
as low as 115/75 the risk of heart attack or stroke doubles
for every 20 point increase in systolic pressure (the higher
of the two, when the left ventricle of the heart actually
pumps blood out into the body) and for every 10 point increase
in diastolic pressure (when the heart is resting in between
pulses). Between the pressures of 120/80 and 140/90 there is
a fourfold increase in heart attack, compared to people with
normal blood pressure. According to Aram Chobanian, M.D. Dean
of Boston University School of Medicine, people over 54 years
old have a 90% chance of developing hypertension at some time.

Aging does not necessarily correlate to hypertension.

For some reason especially here in America, there has been the
idea that there is a normal increase in blood pressure as one
gets older. That has been proven to be false. There are many
populations around the world that reach old age and beyond
without any increase in blood pressure. The idea that blood
pressure goes up with age is based on studying the
American population where it does in most cases. However, this
does not mean that it is normal and is most likely a reflection
of the eating habits and lifestyle of most Americans. I can
still remember when a serum cholesterol was considered normal
if it was less than 275, hardly normal for anyone.

Prevention is the best approach.

Better to not get hypertension than to try to control it with
drugs once you have it. This means lifestyle changes that to
some, are not really what they want to do. No free lunch here.
If you want to prevent hypertension or control it once you have
it, diet and exercise are the answer. Below are twelve simple
lifestyle changes you can make to help keep your blood pressure
under control.

Lose Weight

Exercise

Drinks lots of water

Dietary modification to decrease animal products and sugar
and increase fruits, vegetables and complex carbohydrates.
(The sugar-free vegan MericleDiet is the optimal diet to
help you control your weight, blood pressure and risk for
serious disease).

Stop Smoking

Reduce salt intake

Increase potassium intake (bananas, melons, potatoes)

Reduce or stop alcohol intake

Reduce or stop caffeine

Avoid drugs … recreational (cocaine, ecstasy), birth control
pills, some over the counter anti-inflammatory medicines

Relax, as much as you can.

If you want sweet -use Stevia. It has been shown to be the
safest sweetener today and in well designed experiments
it has reduced blood pressure.

The MericleDiet and Hypertension.

Current dietary recommendations for hypertension are a low
salt diet that restricts saturated fat, cholesterol and
total fats and emphasizes fruits, grains and low-fat dairy.
This diet, however, still allows fish, chicken, dairy and
insulin stimulating sugars such as sucrose and maple syrup.
While there is no doubt that cutting down on these will
improve your blood pressure, it would be best to stop them.
Also, there has been some difficulty with adherence to these
dietary recommendations. Why not learn to transition
completely away from all hypertension causing meats, dairy
and sugars with the MericleDiet, which also is much easier
to adhere to. It is the only 100% organic sugar-free
diet there is today. To visit the MericleDiet please follow

The Mericle Diet and Me

I have been reading about diet and health since 1986, but The
MericleDiet has definitely helped me the most. After following
Dr. Mericle’s suggestions for over 15 months, I can truthfully
say I will never stray from his program. One of the unseen
benefits has been the reduction of blood pressure medicine I
take. Although I have never been a big consumer of sugar,
I now consume even less since I now understand the importance
of keeping your insulin levels low. I am now able to keep my
blood pressure at an optimal level with half the medication
of my pre-MericleDiet days. And, the ease of this program!
I always have something yummy and ready to eat! For the first
time in my adult life I no longer suffer, and I do mean suffer,
from the yo-yo syndrome!

This is absolutely the best program for me and my family…

When it Comes to Good Health and Energy, a Balanced Diet is Key

Filed under: Nutrition @ 12:11 am

You still can’t beat the old starch, fruit and vegetable diet when it comes to good health and an abundance of energy. In addition a good nutrition and balanced diet gives good healthy body weight.

Eating a balanced diet is an important part of good health for everyone. This year, instead of trying yet another diet, resolve to make a positive change for good health. Learning about the important relationship between good health and nutrition is the first step in living longer. This forms a base for good nutrition and good health and may reduce your risk of certain chronic diseases, like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Consider centering your diet around a complex carbohydrate starch based diet like potatoes, rice and pasta instead of fatty meat. Surround that starch with fresh vegetables and fruit. Trust me this really works. To lose or maintain your weight limit your over-all consumption of the starches but go ahead and eat all of the vegetables and fruit you want. By eating these through-out the day you will never feel hungry.

Colorful fruits and vegetables provide the wide range of vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals your body needs to maintain good health and energy levels. Here’s To your good health, longevity, energy and vitality! There are, however, some simple, but powerful steps every person can take to enjoy more energy and good health daily, such as choosing fresh fruits and vegetable instead of canned or frozen. Remember that the body burns the essential fatty acids not for energy, but for special functions necessary for good health and survival. Instead energy is fueled by the complex carbohydrates mentioned earlier. This is how the right food and lifestyle choices contribute to good health, vitality and energy.

The last point I want to make is that there will be times that you must have that steak or hamburger. It is alright to treat yourself every-so-often in order for you to stay the course. Also, a bit of advise, after you make the change to a starched base diet you will crave meat less and less. In fact after a long period of time meat will even make you feel sluggish and sick.

I am not a nutritionist or doctor so please get your doctors approval before making this switch, although I am quite sure that he/she will not have any problem with giving you a thumbs up. Good luck.

Melting Enemy Micro Mechanical Swarms

Filed under: Universe Of Videos @ 9:29 am

Is there are way to melt micro-mechanical insect size swarming MAVs [micro air vehicles] if they cam at you in large swarms? What if they are sent by the enemy and each one is capable of putting a deadly toxin in your body or has a small detonation device or explosive like a fire-cracker plus directional charge? A little more than a bee stinger indeed; you will not be able to run or hide as there will be thousands of these little guys are working as a team to take out every human soldier in your brigade you see.

There may be a way to defeat such intense micro-mechanical swarms? How so you ask? How can you kill 1000’s of incoming little devices like that quick enough to save the troops? Well I believe it can be done, so let me propose the idea of a hand held or man portable laser weapon.

A chemical hand-held high energy laser weapon plugged into the power source and gas canisters on a Humvee with tanks of CO2 or Argon gas ought to do the trick. Simply fire at the swarm and slowly move the weapon in a semi brisk counter clockwise circle spiral from the outer edges of the swarm slowly towards the center and you will indeed melt all the little flying devices and significantly disrupt their swarm and as they get closer several men can assist in firing in a grid patter array using the light from the laser as a guide to get every potential trajectory. Consider all this in 2006.

Acne Prevention - Hygiene and Medication

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 12:47 pm

Proper Hygiene

One of the most common misconceptions about acne is that it’s caused by dirt. It’s not! Acne is caused by a combination of factors you can’t control, like your hormone balance and the natural pace of your skin’s renewal system. Fortunately, there are a number of things you can control that may help you keep your acne in check. Begin by following these simple suggestions for healthy-skin hygiene.

Acne Prevention - Tip #1: Don’t over-wash. Since dirt is not causing your acne, excessive scrubbing and washing won’t make it go away. Try to limit yourself to two washings per day anything more than that can leave your healthy skin dry, and your acne-prone areas irritated. Habitual over-washing may also stimulate extra oil production, which could result in more breakouts.

Acne Prevention - Tip #2: Skip harsh scrubs. It’s okay to exfoliate, but be sure to use a gentle formula with small, smooth grains. Avoid products with almond or apricot shell fragments; they can irritate or even tear your skin and further aggravate your acne.

Acne Prevention - Tip #3: Say no to alcohol. If you use a toner, avoid products with high concentrations of isopropyl alcohol, or common rubbing alcohol. A strong astringent, alcohol strips the top layer of your skin, causing your sebaceous glands to produce more oil. The result? Dry, red skin and possibly more blemishes.

Acne Prevention - Tip #4: Don’t squeeze or pick. Squeezing or picking your blemishes with fingernails, pins or anything else can force bacteria deeper into the skin, causing greater inflammation and infection. You’ll also increase the damage to the surrounding skin, so the blemish is more likely to leave a permanent acne scar.

Acne Prevention - Tip #5: Hands off! Propionibacterium acnes (the bacteria that causes breakouts) is a normal resident of your skin; it doesn’t lead to acne until it gets trapped inside the hair follicle. Excessive touching of your face, including rubbing or even resting your chin in your hands, can drive bacteria into your pores where it can begin its dirtywork.

Acne Prevention - Tip #6: Work out, wash off. When you exercise, your movement generates heat; clothing and equipment cause friction. Until you shower off, heat and moisture are trapped against your skin, creating an ideal breeding ground for the spread of bacteria. So whenever you can, shower off immediately after exercising.

Acne Medications

Acne Prevention Treatment - Find a regimen and stick with it. Most cases of mild acne can be improved with “over-the-counter” products, or products that don’t require a prescription from your doctor. There is a wide range of treatments available, and there’s a good chance one of them will work for you. If you start treatment before your acne gets severe, you’ll have a better chance of avoiding physical and emotional problems down the road. But if your acne gets worse or lasts more than a couple of weeks, see a dermatologist. Here’s a quick listing of the most common products used to treat acne click on the links that interest you for more information on that course of acne treatment.

• Benzoyl Peroxide: Kills the bacteria that causes acne.

• Proactiv® Solution: A dermatologist formulated Combination Therapy® acne management system. Click Here and receive 2 free bonuses when you try Proactiv® Solution Risk-Free for 60 Days!

• Salicylic Acid: Unclogs your pores and encourages skin renewal.

• Tretinoin (Retin-A®): Promotes healthy sloughing.

• Antibiotics: Kill bacteria and reduces inflammation.

• Oral Contraceptives: Help regulate hormone levels.

• Anti-Androgens: Inhibit the body’s production of acne-causing hormones.

• Isotretinoin (Accutane®): Treatment for severe cystic or nodular acne.

There are a number of prescription medications known to cause acne. If you routinely take any of the following drugs (or drugs like them) and have problems with acne breakouts, you may want to consult your physician to discuss an alternative treatment with fewer side affects. But try to keep it in perspective, your health comes first!

Anticonvulsants (like Dilantin) are prescribed for the treatment of epilepsy and other kinds of seizures. Most medications in this family list acne as a common side-effect.

Corticosteroids (like Prednisone) are often used to treat asthma and other chronic lung diseases. Like cortisol, a natural steroid produced by the body during times of intense stress, corticosteroids can stimulate sebum production and lead to blemishes.

Disulfuram (or Antabuse) is prescribed to help chronic alcoholic patients who want to remain in a state of enforced sobriety. When mixed with alcohol, this drug causes a range of unpleasant symptoms intended to discourage further mixing. Unfortunately, regular use of Disulfuram (even when not drinking) can cause acne in some patients.

Immuran. Like other immunosuppressants, Immuran is used to suppress the immune system in patients awaiting an organ transplant. It can help prevent organ rejection; it can also suppress your body’s natural ability to fight the bacteria that cause acne.

INH (or Isoniazid) is typically used to treat tuberculosis, or TB. Thought to be largely eradicated, TB experienced a resurgence in the late 1980s among the homeless population and in patients suffering from AIDS. It continues to be a problem today.

Quinine is prescribed as a precaution against or treatment for malaria. If you’re traveling to a part of the world where malaria is a risk, be sure to ask your doctor about alternative solutions.

Thyroid preparations. Some thyroid medications (such as Thiourea and Thiouracil) are known to trigger acne. These preparations are used to stimulate the thyroid gland in patients with low thyroid function. Large amounts of iodine, which also helps to regulate thyroid function, can also cause breakouts.

Kerwin Chang writes for www.acnestuff.net where you can find out more about acne and other skin care topics.
