Busting Acne Myths Requires Individualized Treatment and More Research

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 2:17 pm

If you have acne, you know the deal- everybody has a cream or suggestion to help you get clear skin. But how do you separate myth, medicine and folklore to find an acne treatment that works for you? That’s what researcher Parker Magin set out to do in a study entitled, A systematic review of the evidence for ‘myths and misconceptions’ in acne management.

Magin and co-researchers from the University of Newcastle, New South Wales, conclude that clinicians cannot be “didactic” when making acne treatment recommendations that are based on diet, hygiene and sunlight exposure. According to Magin, acne treatments should be individualized.

Meanwhile, the Academy of Dermatology has published a press release touting, The Stubborn Truth About Acne: Myths and Misconceptions. Though this article discusses a recent Stanford University survey that examined acne myths held among young adults, it offers no solid advice for securing an acne antidote. Moreover, its meaning is paradoxical.

For example, the article headlines Alexa Boer Kimball, M.D. who is an assistant professor of dermatology at Harvard University. Dr. Kimballs sums up the survey on acne by saying “that substantial differences still exist between popular belief and scientific support, yet this does not change the way patients attempt to care for their acne.”

Dr. Kimballs’s comments at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology casts a discrediting shadow over her groundbreaking research that aimed to separate acne fact from fiction. Just two years ago in 2003, Dr. Kimball was apart of a Stanford University study investigating the effect of stress on acne. Then, Dr. Kimball concluded that, “increased acne severity was significantly associated with increased stress levels… while self-assessed change in diet quality was the only other significant association.” The results of this study suggested that the link between acne, and diet and stress are no longer hypothetical but warrant further examination.

Another investigation aiming to demystify acne came for Dr. Loren Cordain. Cordain and his associates explored the link between diet and acne in a study called Acne Vulgaris: A Disease of Western Civilization. Cordain noted that Kitavan Islanders of Papua New Guinea and the Aché hunter-gatherers of Paraguay had no active cases of acne. This prompted the question, “So why does acne vulgaris affect 79% to 95% of the adolescent population in westernized societies?”

Cordain found that genes alone do not cause the disparity of acne incidences between non-westernized and modernized societies. Other factors must enter the equation.

Acne can arise from hormonal shifts, stress upheavals and a host of other causes. Your best defense against acne is observing yourself and noting what conditions, foods and emotions aggravate your acne situation. From there, you can use self-care to reduce acne flare-ups.

Soybeans: Healthful or Unhealthful?

Filed under: Nutrition @ 1:19 pm

All plants contain chemicals that are healthful and chemicals that can harm us. Fortunately for us, our ancestors learned which plants are edible and healthful, and taught us to avoid those that are poisonous. However, if you eat very large amounts of one food, you can poison yourself, even though reasonable amounts are harmless or beneficial.

For example, soybeans contain genistein, a weak estrogen that may help to prevent breast cancer. They contain omega-3 fatty acids that help prevent heart attacks, and are loaded with fiber that helps to prevent diabetes. But they also contain small amounts of trypsin inhibitors that increase risk for pancreatic damage and cancer in animals. Hemagglutinins in soybeans could cause clots to form and travel to the lungs. Goitrogens in soybeans block thyroid function to increase your need for that hormone. Estrogen-like genistein in soybeans could stimulate immature lobules in breast tissue of infants to increase risk for breast cancer many years later. Phytates in soybeans and many other plants can block the absorption of minerals.

However, you would need to eat very large amounts of soy products to get any of these negative effects. Enjoy a moderate amount of soy foods, but do not let health claims lead you to eat huge amounts of soy to the exclusion of other foods. A healthful diet is a varied diet.

Nutritional Supplements: The Amazing Benefits of Vitamin E

Filed under: Nutrition @ 2:15 am

The real benefits of Vitamin E may surprise you. First of all, what is Vitamin E? Vitamin E is not one nutrient but actually a group of eight nutrients known as tocopherols and tocotrienols. Each one of these groups is further broken down into alpha, beta, gamma and delta.

Alpha-tocopherol is the most active and common form. This is the form most often found in vitamin supplements. This is also the only form of Vitamin E given an RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance). Folks who eat lots of fruits and vegetables and not much fat in their diet, probably don’t get their RDA of alpha-tocopherol. Although alpha-tocopherol is the only Vitamin E component given an RDA, Gamma tocopherol is an important component as well.

Vitamin E is an oil soluble vitamin and is stored by your body.

Benefits of Vitamin E and What It Does For You

What does Vitamin E do? Vitamin E acts as what’s called an antioxidant. If you’ve read the section of my site on Health Supplements, you’ve no doubt read about what an antioxidant does. If not we can review quickly.

The cells of your body are under a lot of stress… oxidative stress. Oxidative stress occurs when highly unstable molecules called free radicals roam freely throughout your body. Free radicals are a by-product of not only the normal metabolic processes of your cells but also your environment. Things such as air pollution, sun exposure, ozone, nitrous oxide (from auto exhaust), cigarette smoke, alcohol consumption and so on.

Free radicals damage cell membranes and can result in changes to your cells that cause chronic diseases down the road. When your cells are being damaged by these free radicals, we say your cells are experiencing oxidative stress… and one of the benefits of Vitamin E is that it is an antioxidant and can significantly neutralize the free radicals that cause oxidative stress.

Benefits of Vitamin E and Heart Disease

Does Vitamin E aid in the prevention of heart disease? Well, the jury’s still out on this one. Theoretically, the benefits of Vitamin E and its ability to significantly reduce the progression of atherosclerotic plaque (buildup on the inside of your artery walls), says yes, without a doubt.

An article in the Journal of the American Medical Association says so also. Using angiography, a correlation was found between taking Vitamin E supplements and a reduction in coronary artery atherosclerosis. Remember the above benefits of Vitamin E and how Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant? Well this is the same mechanism.

As Jeffrey Blumberg, Ph.D., F.A.C.N. of Tufts University, Boston, Massachusetts states “… surveys of over 200,000 people in different communities around the world have provided compelling evidence that diets high in vitamin E and/or use of vitamin E supplements reduce the risk of heart disease.”

Dr. Blumberg stresses the importance of making the distinction between what he calls primary and secondary prevention. Primary prevention focuses on groups of healthy people and testing for new heart disease against different levels of Vitamin E intake over many years. Secondary prevention is taking groups of folks with existing heart disease and testing for a short duration using Vitamin E supplements along with placebos.

It is felt that the results of some secondary trials (the ones that claim no beneficial relationship between Vitamin E and heart disease) may be skewed by other factors in these heart patients such as smoking and diabetes. Also the drugs that these folks are taking along with the Vitamin E supplements could also affect the outcome of the research.

Concerning the benefits of Vitamin E, Dr. Blumberg goes on to state, “In thinking about the value of vitamin E supplementation, particularly in primary prevention, it is important to appreciate not only its potential benefit in heart disease but also in a variety of other chronic diseases associated with oxidative stress, including age-related macular degeneration, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, cataract, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and rheumatoid arthritis.”

Two other studies were reported on in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. These two studies followed thousands of women and men. The researchers found a significant reduction in heart disease of the folks taking Vitamin E supplements.

Benefits of Vitamin E and Alzheimer’s

Can Vitamin E help cut your risk of developing Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia? New studies seem to suggest so. A recent report found in the Archives of Neurology showed that vitamin E taken together with Vitamin C had significant benefits.

The study’s author, Peter Zandi PhD with Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health stated, “These results are extremely exciting. Our findings suggest that vitamins E and C may offer protection against Alzheimer’s disease when taken together in the higher doses available from individual supplements.”

Another study also in the Archives of Neurology found that Vitamin E intake may slow the progression of cognitive decline as we grow older.

How does Vitamin E do this? Well, remember some of the benefits of Vitamin E cited above and how Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant? It is widely accepted that oxidative stress plays a role in the bringing about Alzheimer’s. And by its antioxidant properties, Vitamin E is able to reduce this oxidative stress to the cells of your brain.

More Benefits of Vitamin E

Because of Vitamin E’s antioxidant properties, it has been shown effective in helping treat osteoarthritis. Vitamin E has also shown to be helpful in preventing the formation of cataracts in your eyes. And it might also help in protecting your eyes against ARMD (age related macular degeneration) as you get older. ARMD is the major cause of blindness in the U.S.

In folks with diabetes, Vitamin E and other antioxidants have been effective in controlling blood sugar levels. There has also been found to be a relationship between low levels of Vitamin E and an increased risk of getting diabetes.

Vitamin E has also been found to reduce hot flashes for women going through menopause. And for male smokers, it has been shown to reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

Is Vitamin E Safe

A recent article appearing in the Council for Responsible Nutrition stated that Vitamin E is safe for folks in the general population at doses up to 1600 IU daily. With most of the daily doses you’ll find out there being in the 200 - 400 IU range there should be no concern.

You can learn much more than just the facts about Vitamin E at our content rich site called Health Supplements Advisor.

Ski Holidays for the Eco Friendly Traveler

Hundreds of skiers will soon be searching for their skiing gear and scooting away in search of the greatest snowfall.

And undoubtedly the impact from your carbon footprint will be roughly as far down the list of vacation musts as a Christmas tree after xmas.

Just last year, a tardy snow made the the newspaper headlines and holidaymakers were panicky about the flecks of snow dissolving nearly as soon as they landed.

Holiday business Chalet1802, based at the foot of Mont Blanc in the French Alps, is one of the first independent businesses to go carbon negative and offer skiers an environmentally friendly alternative whilst organising their skiing holidays.

Chalet1802 founder Rona said: Last year was a bit of a shock with the warmest wintertime in 60 yrs in Europe. It was mild and the snowfall didn’t settle so a lot of the early season snowboarding season in the mountains was limited. We chose to become carbon negative to assist in the preservation the snowboarding resort.

Rona said: We are not assaying to dictate to punters but I feel it is all important to grant the guests the option without raising the cost of the stay. When the guest book with us they may more than off set their carbon footprint and we take in the other prices. Naturally we still have a sauna and a hot tub - holiday makers wish for lavishness but not at the expense of the environment, so we looked at ways of decreasing the results of a skier flying over here for a ski holiday.”

The Human System of Digestion and What It’s All About

Filed under: Nutrition @ 6:06 am

When you put food into your mouth it may seem like a short process to you. It may just seem as simple as into your mouth through your stomach and then it will be secreted sooner or later. However, the digestion process is a whole lot longer and complicated than that.

First when you place food into your mouth, your teeth starts to break it down. An adult is packed with thirty two teeth. Different teeth are for different purposes, for example the molar teeth are flat rounded teeth are used for grinding food particles such as fruits and vegetables.

There are also canine teeth which are more useful for tearing and ripping foods such as meat. In your mouth there is a small organ called the tongue. This organ job is the position food, aid in speech and also aid in swallowing. When you chew food it mixes with saliva. Saliva is a mixture of water and proteins. When you swallow the food is pushed to the pharynx. It is very important to take your time to chew your food in order to minimize the risk of choking. The food is than contracted into the esophagus and than ends up in the stomach.

Stomach

The stomach is a muscular and very elastic organ that is shaped like a sac. It fluctuates in size and shape according to how much food is placed into it. Its capacity is about 1 qt for an adult. The first place that women start to put on weight is usually in the hip area. The place that men put on weight first is the stomach area. That’s why the guys that overindulge in beer and alcohol appear to be pregnant with triplets. The stomach basically mix and store food, secrete substances that help dissolve break down food, and it helps control the flow of food into the small intestine. Everyday your stomach secretes about two litters of hydrochloric acid. This and mucus, and other substances make up the gastric fluid in your stomach which helps to form food into a thick substance called chyme. However we all have a protective lining in the stomach called the glandular epithelium which protects our stomach from having a whole burned through it. If we didn’t had this protective lining, or if it became damaged some how than we have some serious medical problems like ulcers for one.

The Small Intestine

The small intestine has three regions. The jejunum, ileum, and the duodenum. The small intestine is about six meters long and is coiled around the abdominal area. About 95 percent of fluid is absorbed around the intestinal area. The small intestine is where the extension of digestion occurs. This organ helps break down the organic compounds into amino acids, monosaccharide, monoglycerides, and fatty acids.

Large Intestine

Food particles that has not been digested or absorbed goes to the large intestine (colon). Foods that are abundant in cholesterol, sugar, and salt makes it difficult for the excretion process. The longer the material is in contact with the colon lining the more damage it will cause around that area. This may increase one’s risk of colon cancer. Also, when feces are very hard it may rupture the appendix. This may lead to health problems such as an inflamed appendix and other health hazards because of all the bacteria that is present in that area.

Satellite TV: A Worthwhile Investment

Filed under: Products @ 8:49 am

Millions of people have signed up for satellite TV. So, what’s so fantastic about satellite TV that makes hundreds of new subscribers sign up every day? You will be pleasantly surprised. Not only does satellite TV provide great programming options, but there are myriad other benefits to be derived. Let’s examine some of these.

First, the idea that satellite TV can provide you with some 500 viewing channels cannot be passed over. Many individuals love the fact that satellite TV offers them the ability to access their favorite movie channels, sports channels and specialty channels. Not only do satellite TV subscribers get access to great stations like HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, Starz, CNN, ESPN and more, but they also get to subscribe to all of the variants of such stations.

The pay-per-view options offered are equally appealing. Viewers can order one-time specials or watch special sports programming if they so choose. Also, if a movie they have been waiting to see becomes available via pay-per-view options, viewers can save quite a bit of money by ordering it that way versus visiting the local cinema. Likewise, when individuals have satellite TV - with the diversity of programming available, fewer visits to the local video dealer are required.

Along with the ability to access outstanding channels, satellite TV is putting control back into the hands of parents across the nation. Parents can now preprogram their satellite television box to block out shows that they don’t want their children watching. This, in addition to the educational television shows on offer from providers like Dish network and DirecTV, promises parents utter control of their children’s viewing habits. It is truly a blessing when parents do not have to worry over whether or not their children are watching something they shouldn’t be, when parents are otherwise occupied or the children are not in their immediate care.

Another perk gained from satellite TV subscription is the access to various music channels. People can enjoy New Age selections, pop rock, heavy metal or classic rock selections and oldies from a variety of stations that offer different music. Also, special weather stations and even games can be enjoyed through satellite TV subscriptions. Children can enjoy video gaming channels and parents can enjoy the myriad television selections provided to them. What’s more, with an easy to use remote control provided with your subscription, programming your preferences couldn’t be an easier process.

Considering the benefits derived from satellite television, the price paid for monthly service parallels such benefits. You get more for your money with satellite TV as you pay just about as much for it as you would pay for regular cable services. Thus, with all of the additional benefits you receive, you will be making your hard earned money work for you. In the end, if you don’t subscribe for satellite TV, you’ll never know what you are missing out on.

Why Supplement?

Filed under: Nutrition @ 6:50 pm

Shocking! According to the Canadian Cancer Society, there will be 145,500 new cases of cancer with an estimated 68,300 deaths occurring in 2004. That means on the day you are reading this, 187 people will die from cancer. Statistics also show that 80% of Canadians will have some form of heart disease. A chart from the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation about risk factors states that 62.4% of heart disease is due to inadequate Fruit and Vegetable Consumption (66.8% for Alberta). In addition, over two million Canadians suffer from Diabetes, which puts them at a higher risk for heart-disease and stroke.

The functioning of our immune system has deteriorated by approximately 30% in the last twenty years and continues to drop at an alarming rate of about three percent per year. Is there a connection between health and nutrient consumption/absorption?

Everyone has busy lifestyles, whether we choose it that way or not. Our bodies are constantly under physical, emotional and environmental stress. To make matters worse, we starve ourselves by not providing our body with the nutrition it needs to function properly. We get little nutrition from food for a variety of reasons. The very convenient processed, ready-to-serve foods available at your corner store, such as cereals, pasta sauces, white bread, canned foods and pop etcetera, are far from nutritious.

We live in the age of science. The food industry makes our foods easy to prepare and inexpensive but with little thought about the nutritional value of the product. Canning, pasteurizing, milling, refining, you name it. Brand name products are created for profit. Lots of sugar, salt and countless additives and preservatives (chemicals) are added, not only to make the food taste better but more importantly from a business point of view, to extend the shelf life. And this market is still growing. These additives can seriously disrupt the natural chemical balance in our body, especially long-term. No wonder cancer and heart disease are on the rise to epidemic levels.

Even when we eat fresh fruits and vegetables, nutrient levels are considerably lower than fifty years ago. This is due to the fact that they are mass produced, genetically modified, picked prematurely (due to storing and transportation issues), extensive use of pesticides, and grown on eroded and nutrient starved lands. Most nutrients (phytonutrients) of fruits and vegetables remain in the roots until they mature. During ripening, the phytonutrients move from the roots into the fruit, slowing down the aging process. This is what makes strawberries turn red and bananas turn yellow. Naturopath Dr. Steve Nugent’s research showed that we need to eat about 52 peaches to get our daily recommended vitamin A, where in 1951 we only needed to eat about 2 to get the same amount. Try to fit that in our already busy lifestyles. And once the fresh produce has made its way into our house, we kill most nutrients by preparation; boiling, micro-waving, freezing etc. Steaming would be the better alternative.

Our health is related to nutrient consumption and absorption. The body protects, repairs, restores and defends itself through nutrients. You have to add supplements to your diet to get enough for your body to do all this work. Regular maintenance is a major key for longevity. Supplements are not intended to replace the need to eat a healthy diet, exercise and maintain a healthy body weight. However, a good supplement system gives your body the basics to keep the immune system up to speed, so our body is able to defend itself against illness, even just the flu. Also keep in mind that pharmaceutical drugs deplete your body from vital nutrients, which means it is even more crucial to take supplements.
What should you look for when buying supplements? Your body needs to recognize the nutrients as food in order to absorb them and send them to the proper systems of our immaculate structure. Synthetic vitamins are NOT absorbed in the body and can even do harm. This is yet another form of processed, test-tube created supplementation. Look for supplements that are food-based. You will more likely find it in a health food store than at the local drugstore.

One way to test if your vitamins dissolve properly is to mix warm water (about 8 fl. oz.) with eight table spoons of white vinegar, to stimulate stomach acid. Then add one of the tablets and check every 5 minutes. After 15 minutes it should be completely dissolved. If not, you are better off trying another brand. And keep in mind that vitamins are only one category of nutrients the body needs.

Drinking filtered water is also paramount to health. You require 50% - 75% of your body weight in ounces, depending on your activity level. Every cell in your body must be bathed in water, to carry nutrients through your system, to regulate temperature and to help eliminate waste. Drink your water in small sips, so your body gets time to absorb it. Small sips of warm water during your meal aids in digestion and chew your food thoroughly to mix it with saliva for better absorption.
Good health and proper nutrition can be yours if you just follow some simple rules; drink lots of water, eat a healthy diet, take food-based supplements, exercise regularly, get plenty of rest and live with a positive mind set.

Organic Food - The Benefits of Natural and Organic Produce

Filed under: Nutrition @ 5:39 pm

Having spent most of my life living off of junk food, I was pretty shocked when I started learning about what goes into the produce we consume every day from the grocery store.

Most of the produce you would buy at the grocery store has been genetically modified to be more appealing to the customer. But, evidence suggests that genetically modified food can be harmful to your health. There are very few regulations on genetically modified food, and there aren’t any long term studies on how they affect human health. About 70% of the food you pick up at the grocery has been genetically modified.

Also, there are many types of insecticides used on produce, that are potentially harmful to your health. Farmers, nowadays, do not use the proper crop rotation when growing their produce. Crop rotation means: The successive planting of different crops on the same land to improve soil fertility and help control insects and diseases. The by-product of no crop rotation is that food in general is much less nutritious and raises a need for more insecticides to be used.

To avoid the health risks that can be associated with eating food that has been genetically modified, has been treated with pesticides and does not use proper crop rotation, eat organic food.

Organic food has been proven to contain sometimes 2-3 times the nutrients that conventional produce has. And with so little research available on this subject, who know how many other ways conventional produce is damaging to our health. How many other ways could organic food be better for us?

If you don’t believe it, try it. When I first began learning about organic food and the differences between it and conventional food, I went to a health food store and bought a bunch or organic produce. I couldn’t believe the difference in taste. The tomatoes I had bought in the grocery store had very little flavor and could only be used as an ingredient in a dish, definitely not something you would want to eat plain. But, the organic tomatoes I bought, I found myself just sitting down and eating plain. They actually had a garden fresh flavor to them. Usually when I would buy fruit, it would sit and rot on the table until I threw it away. It just never sounded good. Now, when I buy organic fruit, I can hardly keep myself from snacking on it all day. It just tastes so much better and healthier.

I have definitely noticed a difference in the way I feel after switching to eating mostly organic food. I have more energy. I crave healthier food. I feel more satisfied when I eat. I don’t crave junk food or sugary snacks anymore. I know other people too, who have noticed the same effects from switching to an organic diet.

Acne - What Causes It?

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 2:49 pm

Many individuals suffer from acne, not just adolescents. Acne is caused by normally occurring bacteria, Propionibacterium acnes. This bacterium gets trapped in plugged skin pores or follicles, especially in the face. In an attempt to escape, the bacterium produce enzymes used to break down the sebum (the excretion produced by sebaceous glands) blocking the escape routes. When the enzymes go to work one of the side effects is inflammation in the area.

Light to moderate cases of inflammation show up as pimples and bumps. This type of acne is known as superficial acne. If the inflammation is deeper within the skin and pores, resulting in cysts and nodules, it is called cystic acne.

The excess sebum is actually a byproduct of testosterone production in the body. This is why young adolescent boys going through puberty and other individuals who are taking testosterone enhanced dietary supplements most often exhibit signs of acne. In women, the hormonal changes occurring before the menstrual cycle may also cause sporadic outbreaks.

A second cause of acne can be traced to diet and a lack of essential fatty acids. The body needs a particular quantity of essential fatty acids to remain in balance. The typical Western diet does not provide adequate amounts for most people. In place of essential fatty acids, trans-fats and other non-essential fats are found in large quantities. This fat ratio imbalance tips the scale in favor of excess sebum production leading to outbreaks of acne.

Particular chemicals and drugs may also be a factor in the appearance of acne. Any drug with added hormones or that change the hormonal balance of the body is a possible culprit. Corticosteroids and industrial pollutants may also be a contributing factor.

Overall health is crucial to remaining acne free. This includes a healthy diet, improved colon health, gentle but effective skin care and decreased exposure to chemicals and drugs which can affect the natural hormone levels of the body.
