The Story of the Very First Catered Chalet Breaks

Filed under: Online Travel Resources, Recreation Tips @ 8:23 am

Back in 1770 the very first tourist hotel was completed in Chamonix Haute Savoie France.

Prior to this Chamonix ski resort was a savage and tough agrarian hamlet where locals captured their animals and farmed their own wheat.

Farmhouses at this time were used to stock dairy cows during the summer.

Milk was kept by making it into cheese and butter and stored in the farm for use over the long wintertimes.

In the snow season the farmhouses were locked up, and any valued possessions were put safely in a tiny mazot.

Quite who devised the chalet vacation is obscured by time, it was probably some zealous people who recognized a formula that was new and exciting.

For entrepreneur Erna Low it commenced whilst she was a nostalgic graduate and couldn’t afford to visit her siblings in Austrias often as she would like to.

Therefore in the 1930’s she took a gamble and put ad in the papers to invite punters on a ski vacation. For only £15 they traveled to and from the resort, had food and board in the sole chalet, and had skiing hire and tuition.

Skiing was strenuous, there weren’t any ski lifts, no safety fixations, simply hard leather shoes, but it was so successful that Erna carried on taking groups on vacations, ensuring she utilized exceptional chalets and guides.

The chalet breaks in the formative years were a far cry to the standards we get nowadays.

Hot water was in short supply, bathrooms would be used by all of the customers, and there wasn’t a chef; the guests were expected to muck in.

It was a real gamble who might be in the lodge for a holiday, you could be agreeably surprised to encounter brand new acquaintances, or have an uncomfortable week amongst strangers. A far cry from the luxury chalets of today.

An Unforgettable Vacation

Filed under: Online Travel Resources @ 5:15 am

Our vacation to the pristine beaches of Ocho Rios in Jamaica was absolutely unforgettable. We enjoyed it so much that we have already decided to go back there this winter.

In Jamaica we decided to stay at the Beaches Boscobel Resort and Golf Club. The kids loved this hotel. They had a great time at the Pirates Island Water Park. This park has an aqua play area called Treasure Isle which had over a dozen water slide meant for kids of all ages. The play area had a very cute sea creature themed décor. But of course needless to say the kids only noticed the water slides and it was really difficult to pry them away from the slides when it was time for lunch.

The hotel’s Kids Camp was a guilt-free way of abandoning our children to enjoy our own vacation. It was easier to bask under the sun on the pristine beaches without any temper tantrums to haunt us. My husband naturally drifted towards the swim-up bar. The pristine beaches were also irresistible to him and the other guests as they enjoyed a nice game of beach volleyball.

The best part of the holiday was when my daughter gave me an almost crumbled cookie that she herself had baked at the camp. She had apparently spent all afternoon baking ‘zillions’ of cookies with the help of the Cookie Monster and Mr. baker from the bakery. She had insisted on clicking photos of her baking skills to prove that she herself had done it. There were also other pictures of her and Abby Cadabby and Zoe, from Sesame Street, which she wanted to show her school friends.

One thing that I enjoy a lot is watching the mannerisms of other people. The pristine beaches of Ocho Rios gave me a great opportunity to observe Japanese and Europeans tourists. I also love a little adventure so I tired my hand at windsurfing, kayaking, and scuba diving. The hydrobike was definitely my favorite.

Now that I am back I am eager to show off my perfect tan to my friends. Now I bet it’s easy for you to understand why I want to go back to Jamaica as soon as I can.
